THE COSTUMES |
|
Thanks to scrupulous researches on records and archives, the association has succeeded in producing 4 costumes again, all of them going back to different historical periods covering more than a century. The “Bride and the Vergaro of Matelica”, of the early ‘800, were strictly duplicated following the original sketches still kept in Bertarelli Gallery in Milan, that, upon Napoleon’s request, treasures all the costumes of the occupied territories. The bride is wearing the typical “littellu”, a white linen hand embroidered towel that was folded up and used like a headdress during the wedding. The future mother in law was used to give it to the bride to welcome her in the new family. The neck was adorned with red coral necklace, the longer it was, the richer the family was, as, at that time, coral was more precious than gold. The “Vergaro of Matelica” usually wore knee-length trousers that were typical at that time, and a wide brims hat. The holiday costume of the countrymen in Matelica was usually worn on Sunday and it dates back to the first half of 18th century. To point out the swath wrapped all around the waist: red for the young men still looking for a wife, and white for the ones already married. Typical costume of singers and musicians, usually worn the night between 5th and 6th of January, during the «Pasquella» time. It dates back to the early ‘900. To point out the «ferraiolu», a wide full-cut mantle made of woollen cloth, very useful to sheltered oneself from the cold weather during the winter wandering in the countryside. At that time Matelica was just well known for the production of this kind of woollen clothes. The association has duplicated also the typical costume of the commoners, living in the higher lands of Marche region at the beginning of 1900, in particular of the so called “Marca” land. This costume was usually worn during the patronal festivals and the most important events. To point out that the usual knee-length trousers of 1800 reached now the ankle-length.
